"PRT-S" Step by step installation

PRT-S will solve the age old problem of removing a connector or having to use over size polyolefin heat shrink tubing to seal and cover terminations and connections.

  • PRT-S is sized to fit cable bundles from 1/8" to 2" in diameter.

CAUTION: Prior to beginning any work on production assemblies it is suggested that installers practice using excess material and instructions on mockup assemblies. Personnel familiar with installing heat shrinkable tubing will be aware of some of the general do’s and don’ts when installing these type of materials. However, working with a split heat shrinkable material and a pressure sensitive adhesive presents some different handling requirements from standard tubing. Good results will be obtained by closely following the installation procedures below. Use the "PRT" Sizing Chart and find the measured outside diameter in column one. Select the correct "PRT" size from column two. Note: Selecting a "PRT" size smaller than shown in the selection chart could result in the "PRT" material opening up during the heating process.

Follow the step by step pictures to learn how to properly install our new "PRT-S" product.  If you would like to read the step by step instructions or would like to print the instructions for later use please click  on "PRT-S" Directions button to see the written instructions.

STEP 1

Here we see a wire harness prepped and ready for PRT-S installation. Notice that the area is free from clips, wire ties or anything that could leave a raised area once the PRT-S is installed.

STEP 3

Using the  "PRT-S" sizing chart find the correct size of "PRT-S" that matches up with the measurement of the area to be covered.

STEP 5

Measure the correct amount of "PRT" that will cover the intended area and using standard scissors cut across cleanly avoidingdiagonal cut to prevent the possibility of splitting.

STEP 6

Determine the shield grounding method required by your in-house Engineering drawings or process specifications. If none exist, refer to Zippertubings installation guide "Termination and Splicing of SST Tubing." This document describes various methods for providing a ground to the shield cloth material found in "SST" tubing. The shield cloth material used in "SST" tubing is the same as found in "PRT-S" tubing.

STEP 7

Laying the harness on a clean flat surface, wrap the cut piece around the area to be covered.

STEP 8

Once the shield termination method has been addressed you may install the "PRT S" tubing. Place the "PRT-S" tubing around the cable so that the metallic shield cloth is between the cable and the outer heat shrinkable jacket material. Wrap the loose edge of the shield cloth around the wire bundle or cables so as to cover as much of the cable as possible. Peel back the first inch or two of the adhesive release liner on the shield cloth and adhere it to the cable bundle (Figure 1). Continue to wrap and bond the shield around the cable over the entire assembly length.

CAUTION: It is important to wrap the shield cloth around as much of the cable as possible to insure complete shield coverage.

STEP 9

Here you see a harness completely wrapped with the Z-Cloth shield ready for the final installation step of attaching the tubing and heating to fit.

STEP 10

Once the shield cloth has been correctly positioned around the cable, locate the non-adhesive edge of the heat shrinkable jacket. Position this edge over the jacket edge which contains the adhesive and release liner. Peel back the first inch or two of this release liner and align the edge over the adhesive so that all the adhesive will be covered. Avoid contacting the adhesive with your fingers as much as possible. Click Image for larger version.

Once the first inch or two of the overlap has been sealed, continue to remove short sections of the release liner and seal the tubing (Figure 2). Avoid creating wrinkles in the overlap area. Once the entire piece of tubing has been installed, rub the seam overlap firmly using your thumb to insure contact. Minor wrinkles should disappear when the tubing shrinks.

STEP 11

Heating to Shrink - After completely sealing the "PRT-S" using the attached adhesive strip the next step is to shrink the "PRT-S" on to the area to be covered. Using a standard commercial heat gun intended for use on polyolefin heat shrink tubing, begin to warm and shrink the "PRT-S" using rotating indirect heating procedures typically used when shrinking common Polyolefin heat shrink tubing being careful not to over heat the tubing thus possibly causing uneven shrinkage.

Begin applying heat to the "PRT-S" tubing several inches away from the tubing end. Applying heat at the tubing end first could result in the tubing overlap seam opening up!
Begin applying the heat source to the area opposite the jacket overlap seam. This will cause the shield cloth bonded to the jacket material to be drawn around the cable and insures shield coverage well beyond 360 degrees. Once the tubing opposite the overlap seam has been shrunk, apply heat to the overlap area. This area will require extra heating time to get the inner layer of the overlap to shrink.

prt-s installation

As the overlap area shrinks, the edge of the overlap may tend to lift off the PSA and roll back slightly. Under normal circumstance this edge should lay back down when fully shrunk. Use your fingers to lightly tap this area down should your installation results in a lifted edge after full recovery. The "PRT-SH" material can be worked and formed easily while it is warm. Allow assembly to cool.

A hot air type heat gun with a temperature setting of at least 250 F (121 C) is required to shrink the "PRT-SH" material. Use an appropriately sized heat reflector whenever possible to insure uniform tubing wall thickness and avoid cold spots (fish eyes). Note: You may shrink the tubing in place immediately after sealing. The adhesive has no "cure time" requirements. Click Image for larger version.

STEP 12

Adhesive cleanup - In order to have a clean and non binding application removal of excess adhesive is necessary. To remove excess, simply roll your finger over the seam causing the adhesive to ball up and be removed. DO NOT use any kind of adhesive remover or solvents to remove excess adhesive!    Click Image for larger version.
